Wearing Permanent Jewelry through Airport Security/TSA

Buckle up and let’s discuss airport security!

We. along with numerous clients who have shared their experiences, have collectively travelled over the past three years across several airports in North America, the Caribbean, Asia and Europe, and we have yet to encounter any issues with airport security metal detectors or full-body scanners or TSA wearing permanent jewelry.

What explains the absence of complications in this context?

Most metal detectors are specifically calibrated to identify ferrous metals, which contain iron. Consequently, permanent jewelry made from gold or sterling silver—both of which are non-ferrous and non-magnetic—typically does not activate these detectors. In contrast, jewelry composed of stainless steel may trigger the alarm due to its magnetic properties. Should your jewelry set off a detector, you can be assured that presenting it to security personnel will resolve the matter.  Should security insist on removal of your permanent jewelry, follow your permanent jewelry’s artists instructions on how best to remove it. Hang on to it and reweld when you return home.
